Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
“Why does the resin on my front tooth keep breaking,
even though I’ve had it redone several times?”
Resin matches the color of natural teeth and is simple to treat,
so it is often used when front teeth are chipped.
But just as the edge of a glass cup can chip easily,
resin can fracture easily when force repeatedly concentrates in one area.
In particular, with an edge-to-edge bite,
the upper and lower front teeth meet tip to tip,
so the resin is continually exposed to direct impact.
That is why the concern of “it broke again” keeps repeating.
Today, I will introduce two things:
-
Why resin on the front teeth keeps breaking with an edge-to-edge bite
-
A real case where resin chipping caused by an edge-to-edge bite was stably improved with laminate, without orthodontics
-
Why does front tooth resin
keep breaking repeatedly with an edge-to-edge bite?
Front tooth resin chipping caused by an edge-to-edge bite: a case resolved without orthodontics
In a normal bite,
the upper front teeth slightly overlap the lower front teeth by about 2 mm.
Normal bite
Because the upper and lower teeth contact over a surface,
the biting force is distributed across the entire tooth.
But an edge-to-edge bite is different.
Edge-to-edge bite
The upper and lower front teeth do not overlap
and instead collide tip to tip.
It is similar to placing two pairs of scissors upright and having only the ends keep colliding.
Edge-to-edge bite
Because the force is concentrated only on the edge,
this is a structure that is prone to cracking.
If resin is restored in this state,
every time you chew,
the impact is transmitted directly to the edge of the resin.
So it chips little by little, falls off,
and even changes color.
You may wonder, “Why does it break so often?”
But in fact, it is not a problem with the resin itself,
but the result of the bite structure.

A real case where laminate was used to
stably improve the problem without orthodontics
The patient introduced today
had an edge-to-edge bite since childhood.
250203 Front tooth resin chipping caused by an edge-to-edge bite: a case resolved without orthodontics
After a front tooth chipped once, it was restored with resin several times,
but as force kept being applied to the same area while chewing,
the situation of breaking again and discoloring again kept repeating.
250203
Recently, the resin broke again,
so the lengths of the right and left front teeth looked different,
250203
and the slightly protruding appearance of the front teeth also stood out,
so the patient visited the clinic saying they were more concerned every time they smiled.

In fact, in cases like this, orthodontic treatment
is the most standard solution.
That is because improving the edge-to-edge bite itself changes
how force is directed onto the front teeth.
However, the patient
wanted to find a solution that was possible without orthodontics,
and also had a clear request to ease the protruding appearance of the front teeth even a little
and align the lengths on both sides neatly.
Considering these conditions,
we decided on a direction that would address both function and aesthetics with laminate.
The key to making laminate last is to prevent the front teeth from colliding head-on.
So it was important to create a very slight amount of clearance.

Through the in-house dental laboratory, which is one of our clinic’s strengths,
we were able to communicate directly with the dental technician
and immediately adjust factors such as:
· how much to reduce the protruding appearance of the front teeth
· how to match the lengths
· what angle would reduce the force as much as possible
by comparing them with the actual oral condition.

This was not simply a laminate made to “look good,”
but one completed with a functional design that lowers the risk of fracture.
250203 (before) 250410 (after)
This is the final laminate after placement.
· The lengths of both front teeth became neat and even
· The feeling of the teeth protruding forward was naturally reduced
· Stable space was secured so that less force would be applied even with the edge-to-edge bite
The laminate was made just as I had planned,
so I also felt very satisfied.
250410 Front tooth resin chipping caused by an edge-to-edge bite: a case resolved without orthodontics
Front tooth resin that keeps breaking repeatedly with an edge-to-edge bite
is often due not to the material, but to the bite structure.
Orthodontics may be the most ideal solution,
but not everyone can choose orthodontic treatment.
In cases like this, as in today’s example, a laminate design
that takes the bite into account can also be very helpful
to achieve both aesthetics and function at the same time.
If your front tooth resin keeps breaking and you are worried about it,
please do not worry alone.
After accurately diagnosing the current bite condition,
we will find the safest and most realistic solution for the patient.
Thank you.
