Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
As people get older,
many feel that their joints are not what they used to be,
or that their bodies get tired easily.
Just as the body changes,
teeth also undergo small changes as we age.
"I was fine when I was younger,
but these days food gets stuck in my teeth whenever I eat.
My teeth also seem more yellow.
I guess teeth age too!"
Today, through the case of a patient in their 50s who visited us with these concerns,

I will calmly explain why the gap between the front teeth and the yellowing of the teeth appeared,
and what treatment was appropriate.
Why does food get stuck in the gap between the front teeth?
Is it a care problem?
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic: Yellow Teeth, Gaps Between the Front Teeth—Could It Be Due to Poor Care?
When food keeps getting stuck between the front teeth and the teeth look yellow,
most people first think of inadequate brushing or care.
However, when we actually examine it at the dental clinic,
these changes are often caused not simply by poor care,
but by the combined effects of gum height changes that occur with age
and tooth wear.

The patient in their 50s we are introducing today
came in with similar concerns.
This patient had had a gap between the front teeth since they were younger,
and had previously had the space between the teeth filled with resin.

Right after treatment, there was no major discomfort,
and they used it well for a long time,
but over time,
they said food started getting stuck between the front teeth.
As people get older, the gums naturally recede little by little,

and in this process,
a tiny gap forms between the gums and the boundary area that had been covered with resin.
The phenomenon in which the space between the teeth appears dark in a triangular shape as the gums recede
is called a "black triangle."

When we compared the initial consultation photo from a year ago with the recent photo,
we could see that gum recession had progressed noticeably,
and the size of the black triangle had clearly become larger than before.

As a result,
food kept getting stuck repeatedly,
and brushing became increasingly difficult,
so the discomfort after meals had no choice but to continue.

Yellow teeth: Why teeth become increasingly yellow as you age

Another concern the patient had was that
their teeth looked darker and more yellow than before.

Our teeth are made up of the white enamel that covers the outside
and the yellowish dentin underneath it.
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic: Yellow Teeth, Gaps Between the Front Teeth—Could It Be Due to Poor Care?
Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body,
but
through thousands of chewing movements over a lifetime,
and repeated exposure to food, lifestyle habits, and external stimuli,
it inevitably wears down little by little.
As this happens,
when the enamel becomes thinner,
the color of the underlying dentin begins to show through,
and the teeth gradually appear darker and more yellow.

This type of tooth discoloration caused by aging is different in origin from surface staining,
so it is often difficult to improve with professional teeth whitening alone.
Why we chose laminate instead of resin retreatment
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic: Yellow Teeth, Gaps Between the Front Teeth—Could It Be Due to Poor Care?
To improve both the gap between the front teeth and tooth discoloration,
resin retreatment could also have been considered,
but if the gums recede further,
the likelihood of the gap reappearing is high,
and resin tends to discolor and wear down relatively quickly over time,
so in this case,
we determined that laminate treatment would be more appropriate.
Laminate is a treatment that improves both the color and shape of the teeth
by attaching a thin ceramic restoration to the front surface of the tooth,
and it is a treatment method that can address the black triangle and tooth discoloration at the same time.

The difference of a dental clinic with an in-house lab
Godeok-dong Dental Clinic: Yellow Teeth, Gaps Between the Front Teeth—Could It Be Due to Poor Care?
Our clinic
operates an in-house dental lab directly.
When an outside lab is used,
the prosthesis fabrication and modification process often takes longer because the work has to be sent back and forth,
and treatment can take more time.
In contrast, with an in-house lab,
the medical team, technician, and patient can communicate directly,
and if even a small detail about the color or shape is not satisfactory,
it can be adjusted on the spot.

This patient also gave detailed feedback about the tooth color and translucency,

and by reflecting that immediate feedback,
a natural and harmonious front tooth line was completed. ^^

The gap between the front teeth and tooth discoloration
are often not issues caused simply by insufficient care,
but changes that occur as a result of aging and past treatment history working together.
Like the body,
teeth can also reach a point where
care alone is no longer enough as we age.
At times like these, choosing the right treatment based on the current condition of the teeth is most important.
If you are experiencing similar discomfort and concerns,
please do not worry alone,
and find the direction that suits you through a consultation with a specialist.
Thank you for reading this long post today.
