Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
A few years ago,
there was a brief buzz when entertainer Lee Ji-hye’s laminate veneer
came off during a mukbang shoot.

Since then,
when I consult with patients,
I hear similar questions very often.
“Can a laminate veneer come off while eating?”
“I see a lot of posts online saying they can break..”
It is actually very natural
for these questions to come up.
Since this is a treatment that is attached to my own teeth,
it is only natural to worry about what if something goes wrong.
One thing is clear, however.
Laminate veneers are not a treatment
that is originally prone to breaking or falling off.
In fact, breakage or detachment
is much more likely to happen not simply because of bad luck,
but because several conditions overlap.
So today,
I’d like to talk about why laminate veneers can break or come off,
in what situations problems arise,
and how to choose a dental clinic
if you want to reduce the chances of this happening.
Why do laminate veneers break?
Cheonho Laminate Fracture and Detachment: Choosing the Right Dental Clinic Is Important to Reduce the Risk.
Laminate veneers are
thinner ceramic than you might think.

They have the advantage of looking like natural teeth,
but that also makes them relatively sensitive to force.
Even if you do not remember any major impact,
problems can occur due to the causes below.
- Front-tooth usage habits
Tearing food with the front teeth,
chewing hard things with the front teeth,
and habits such as clenching or teeth grinding
all place stress on laminate veneers.

A worn front tooth
Even if it seems fine at first,
repeated force like this
can cause problems.
- Bite and occlusion issues
When chewing,
if the laminate veneer is the first point of contact,
it naturally receives more force.
If one particular tooth is constantly under force,
the likelihood of breakage inevitably increases.
- A design that is too thin
Making it as thin as possible
is not always the best choice.
If retention and strength are not sufficiently considered,
even if it looks natural,
it can instead lead to fracture or detachment.
- Problems during the bonding process
Laminate veneers are a treatment
that is maintained through bonding.

Rubber dam, a material used for moisture control
Moisture control is the most important part of the bonding process,
and if saliva and moisture are not completely blocked out,
even if everything looks fine at first,
problems can arise over time.
In this way,
when multiple conditions overlap—usage habits, occlusion, design, and the bonding process—
small cracks that are not visible to the eye can form,
and at some point,
"Huh? It broke."
"It suddenly came off."
can become the situation.
A case where a laminate veneer fractured due to repeated force
Cheonho Laminate Fracture and Detachment: Choosing the Right Dental Clinic Is Important to Reduce the Risk.
There was a patient who visited us because the laminate veneer on the left front tooth had broken.

250827
It was already partially fractured,
and it had already passed the stage where a simple adjustment could solve it.

250827
We checked and found that the bite was very tight,
and
the resin used to fix the retainer after orthodontic treatment
was left slightly too high.

250827 The resin used to fix the retainer was left significantly high
Because of that, the force when chewing was concentrated on the laminate veneer,
and it eventually led to fracture.
In this case, rather than a partial repair,
we removed the existing laminate veneer
and remade it.

A case where a laminate veneer detached because retention was insufficient
Cheonho Laminate Fracture and Detachment: Choosing the Right Dental Clinic Is Important to Reduce the Risk.
This time,
it was a patient who came in after the laminate veneer on the right front tooth had simply come off with a "pop."

The laminate veneer itself had no major damage,
but
there was not enough bonding retention because the amount of tooth reduction was small.
Rebonding was one option, but under the same conditions,

240508
we judged that the risk of it detaching again was high,
so after improving the shape,
we made a new laminate veneer.

What are the criteria for choosing a dental clinic to reduce laminate veneer fracture and detachment?
Cheonho Laminate Fracture and Detachment: Choosing the Right Dental Clinic Is Important to Reduce the Risk.
If you are considering laminate veneers,
it may be helpful to check the following during your consultation.
-
Whether they look at chewing force and bite together
-
Whether they only emphasize minimal tooth reduction
-
Whether they honestly explain retention
-
Whether they guide you in advance on what to do if a problem occurs
If these explanations come up naturally,
there is a high chance they are considering treatment in a way that allows the result to last longer.
Breakage or detachment of a laminate veneer
is not a problem that appears suddenly,
but is often the result of
the force and structure the teeth are subjected to,
and the choices made during treatment,
accumulating little by little.
That is why, in laminate veneer treatment,
it is important not only to consider how thin and beautiful it looks,
but also the environment in which your teeth are used.
After carefully examining your current dental condition and usage environment,
I will work with you to decide on a direction
that is not burdensome for the patient
and is realistically maintainable over the long term.
Thank you.
