Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
If you have spots on your teeth, they can look mottled
and often become something you notice when you smile.
So we first check whether whitening alone will be enough,
and if needed, we also consider resin or prosthetic treatment.
However, for spotted teeth,
it is difficult to say,
"This treatment is the best," with certainty.
Because the results can vary quite a bit depending on each patient’s condition,
such as
the extent of the spots,
the difference in color,
and bite force.
Today, to reduce regret when choosing a treatment,
I will first organize five criteria,
and then explain how they were applied in an actual case.
Treatment for spotted teeth: 5 criteria to reduce failure
Godeok Station Dental Clinic
- First look at the extent and depth of the spots
Godeok Station Dental Clinic: Spotted, mottled Teeth — 5 Criteria to Reduce Treatment Failure
For spotted teeth treatment,
the first thing to check is
how widely the spots are spread,
and whether they are superficial or deep.
Whether they are limited to one or two front teeth,
or spread across the front teeth as a whole,
can change the treatment choice.

- Consider whether whitening could actually be counterproductive

When the spot area is wide
or the color difference from the surrounding teeth is large,
whitening can instead make the spots stand out more,
which can make the mottled appearance stronger.
So whitening should be judged carefully
only after thoroughly examining the condition.
- Consider the long-term changes of resin treatment

Resin treatment has the advantage
of requiring less tooth reduction,
but when applied over a wide area,
possible discoloration or visible margins over time
must also be considered.

- Check the direction of the bite, that is, the chewing force

In spotted teeth treatment,
an important factor just as much as aesthetics
is how the teeth come together.
If a thin prosthetic is applied to a tooth
that receives a lot of force when chewing,
it can eventually lead to fracture or debonding.
So before treating spotted teeth,
it is essential to check the bite condition as well.
- Judge based on the future, not just the present

For spotted teeth treatment,
what matters is not just how nice they look right now,
but how long they can be used
without problems in the future.
Front teeth that looked mottled because of spots: treatment process
Godeok Station Dental Clinic: Spotted, mottled Teeth — 5 Criteria to Reduce Treatment Failure
This patient was a teenager,
and white spots were spread relatively widely
across the upper front teeth.

In some teeth, the spots covered more than half
of the tooth surface,
so the shade of the front teeth was not uniform.
Whitening was considered first

In this case, because the spots were widespread
and the color differences were clear,
if whitening were performed,
although the overall teeth might become brighter,
there was a high possibility that the spotted areas would stand out even more.
So we judged that whitening would be
hard to use as a realistic solution.
Then what about resin treatment?

However, when spots are distributed across the front teeth,
resin must be applied to multiple surfaces,
and the possibility of discoloration over time
also needs to be considered.

In particular, since the patient was still a teenager,
we also had to consider long-term stability,
because these are teeth that will be used for decades.
For these reasons, we primarily considered laminate veneers,
which have good color stability
and can naturally cover a wide range of spots.
But there was another important point here.
It was the bite,
that is, how the teeth fit together.
250503
After checking, the canine areas on both sides
were in close contact,
and the structure directly transmitted force when chewing.
250503
In this condition,
a thin laminate veneer may be burdened over the long term.
So we divided the treatment method and chose accordingly:
for the front teeth, which receive relatively less force,
laminate veneers;
for the canine area, where chewing force is concentrated,
a strong zirconia crown.

Although different treatments were applied,
we carefully adjusted the color and shape
so they would blend naturally with the surrounding teeth.
In this process,
we communicated directly with the dental technician in our in-house lab
while fabricating the prosthetics,
so even subtle color or shape adjustments
could be reflected immediately.

As a result,
even though different materials were used,
the entire front tooth area could connect naturally
as if it were a single tooth.
Treatment for spotted teeth is not just about
covering visible stains.
Especially for teenage patients,
the front teeth will need to be used continuously
for decades,
so more than immediate aesthetic improvement,
what matters is whether they can be maintained for a long time without problems.
After thoroughly examining the current tooth condition,
the bite, and the usage environment,
we decide together on a method
that is not burdensome for the patient
and can realistically be maintained for a long time.
If you are considering treatment for spotted teeth,
first check which method is most stable
for your current condition.
Thank you.^^
