Anterior veneers: Introducing a solution that can help reduce concerns about tooth sensitivity.
Hello.
I’m the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
“Is it really possible without damaging the actual tooth?
I also saw posts saying the teeth became sensitive after veneers,
so they couldn’t drink cold water..”
This is the question people ask most often
when they are considering veneers.

Anterior veneers: Introducing a solution that can help reduce concerns about tooth sensitivity.
When you actually search for veneers,
you often come across online posts
about concerns over tooth sensitivity.
If you are looking into treatment because your teeth are uneven,
and you read posts saying,
“a lot of healthy tooth structure was shaved down”
or “the teeth became so sensitive that even cold water was impossible to drink,”
you naturally become even more afraid.

Anterior veneers: Introducing a solution that can help reduce concerns about tooth sensitivity.
You want to change the shape of your front teeth,
but you worry that your teeth might become even more sensitive,
so it is not easy to decide right away.
Today, based on a patient case treated with minimal reduction veneers,
I will explain why this anxiety arises
and under what conditions things can differ.
Why does tooth sensitivity after veneers
become a concern?
Anterior veneers: Introducing a solution that can help reduce concerns about tooth sensitivity.
Tooth sensitivity
varies depending on how much of the tooth
was removed and how deeply it was reduced.
Teeth are made up of enamel on the outside
and dentin underneath.

Enamel is a layer that is relatively resistant to irritation,
but dentin is closer to the nerve
and reacts more sensitively to external stimulation.
During the tooth-shaping process,
the deeper the reduction becomes,
the greater the chance of feeling sensitivity can also become.
That is why many reviews saying “I couldn’t drink cold water”
often involve cases where the reduction range was large.
This is why “minimal reduction” is important.

Minimal reduction veneers, when necessary,
remove only about 0.3–0.5 mm,
that is, the surface is refined only within the enamel layer
to create space for the restoration.

A view showing minimal reduction within the enamel
It may be easier to understand if you think about renovating a house.
Touching up only the exterior finish versus affecting the columns,
there is a completely different level of burden.
The same applies to teeth.
If reduction is planned only within the outer shell called enamel,
it is possible to reduce nerve stimulation
while still expecting an aesthetic improvement.
Of course, minimal reduction is not possible in every case,
and the approach can vary depending on tooth alignment and the degree of spacing.
A patient case with lower front teeth spacing
Anterior veneers: Introducing a solution that can help reduce concerns about tooth sensitivity.

This patient who visited the clinic had a gap between the two lower front teeth,
and was bothered by the space between the teeth looking especially empty when smiling.
230720
The teeth themselves were generally healthy,
but the lower front teeth are an area where the tooth surface area and thickness are not large structurally.
In particular, the enamel thickness covering the lower front teeth is relatively thin,
so even if the same amount is removed,
it can feel more irritating.
230720
So even for front teeth,
there are many cases where a more careful approach is needed
than with the upper front teeth.
So in this patient’s case,
we planned more carefully.
What the patient was most worried about was also,
“Will veneers make my teeth sensitive?”
So from the initial consultation stage,
we carefully checked how much reduction could be minimized,
and whether veneers were the appropriate choice
for this tooth structure.
When we examined the degree of spacing between the two lower front teeth,
there was not much tooth tilting or major alignment change,
and the existing tooth thickness was also relatively stable.

Under these conditions,
we judged that it would be possible to complement the space with veneers
without reducing much of the tooth.
The actual amount of reduction and the treatment process
The lower front teeth are an area that can become sensitive
even if only a little too much is done,
so we first defined the reduction range in detail.
Even during the actual reduction process,
rather than finishing all at once,
we checked the tooth surface condition in between
and adjusted so that there would be no unnecessary extra shaping.

The reduction amount was kept to a minimum,
at approximately 0.3–0.4 mm.
Even when viewed in person,
you can see that there is not a significant difference between before and after the reduction.
2330720 (Before) 231017 (After)
After the reduction was completed,
we took an accurate impression
and fabricated the veneers to match the space and shape of the lower front teeth,
and during the bonding process,
we checked the bite and the direction of force again.

As a result,
we were able to finish stably,
within the expected range and without major irritation.
Anterior veneers are not a treatment where finishing quickly is the priority.
Especially in areas that can structurally become sensitive,
like the lower front teeth,
how carefully the treatment is approached
has a greater impact on the result.
If you have been hesitating about veneers because you are worried about tooth sensitivity,
rather than increasing your anxiety by only reading posts online,
you may want to have a consultation once
and organize the options available for your current condition.
Thank you for reading this long post today.^^
