Hello,
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
"The tip of my front tooth chipped a little.
Can’t I just smooth it down a bit and use it as is?"
"I heard fillings made with resin come off quickly.
Wouldn’t it be better to get veneers from the start?"
When I meet patients at the clinic,
these practical concerns are among the most common.
In fact, the front teeth are almost like the "first impression" of the face,
the part that determines the overall mood of our appearance.
Just as a tiny stain on clean clothes can keep bothering you all day,
a small chip at the edge of a front tooth is something you keep noticing every time you smile.
Whether simply smoothing it a little is enough,
or whether a more active treatment such as resin or veneers is needed,
depends on the condition.
I’ll explain step by step from here what the best way is to restore it as effectively as possible while preserving your natural teeth as much as possible^^
There are three main treatment options for a chipped front tooth tip
Chipped Tip of the Front Teeth, Smoothing, Resin, or Veneers? Which Treatment Is Right for Me
Depending on how much the patient’s tooth has chipped,
and where the chip is,
it is broadly divided into three treatment methods.
- Tooth shaping (smoothing)
When the chipped area is very small, the sharp edge is gently filed down.

Think of it as similar to tidying up the tip of a nail when doing nail art.
It can be done on the same day, but depending on how much is chipped,
the tooth may become just a little shorter.
- Resin treatment
This method adds a tooth-colored material called resin
to the chipped area.

It can restore the area neatly on the same day without shaving down the tooth,
but over time,
it may become discolored by foods such as curry or coffee,
or it may suddenly come off when chewing something hard.
- Veneers
This is a method that attaches a thin, precise ceramic shell
to the outer surface of the tooth.

It can permanently improve not only the shape but also the color of the teeth,
so it is also known as a procedure many celebrities receive.
Actual treatment case for a chipped tooth tip
Chipped Tip of the Front Teeth, Smoothing, Resin, or Veneers? Which Treatment Is Right for Me
A patient who recently visited our clinic had
a chipped central area on both sides of the upper front teeth.
251212
In fact, the chipped area itself was not very large,
so at first I even considered helping with a simple treatment by just slightly smoothing the sharp parts.
However, after taking a careful look,
there was one major issue.
The teeth had already worn down overall over a long period of time,
so the teeth themselves had become shorter.
251212
In this situation, if we smooth the tooth based on the chipped area,
what happens?
The already short tooth would inevitably become much shorter than before.

Rather than forcing the tooth to be smoothed down,
I wanted to find a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing alternative.
So I explained the pros and cons of resin and veneers one by one
in a way that was easy for the patient to understand.
After putting together the diagnosis,
veneer treatment turned out to be the best alternative for the patient.
Let me tell you right away why.
- It was because of the patient’s "bite condition."
The upper and lower front tooth tips were almost touching exactly,
close to an "edge-to-edge bite."

In such cases, if the chipped area is simply filled with resin,
there is a high risk that strong force will be placed on that area every time the patient eats,
and it may quickly pop off.
- There was a "striped discoloration" across the entire tooth.
This was a trace left by previous antibiotic use,

but resin can cover the chipped area,
it cannot change the dull color of the entire tooth.
In the end, veneer treatment was the best option for the patient,
because it could durably restore the chipped shape
while also improving the long-standing concern about the tooth shade all at once.
Do veneers require a lot of tooth reduction?

Do veneers require a lot of tooth reduction?
This is the part most people worry about.
But there is no need to worry too much. ^^
Veneers are completely different from crown treatment,
which involves reducing the tooth all the way around.

Depending on the condition of the teeth, treatment may be done with no reduction at all,
called "no-prep," or with only a very small amount of shaping where absolutely necessary,
called "minimal prep."
Even with minimal prep, the outer surface of the tooth is refined very slightly,
by about 0.3–0.5 mm.
After smoothing the surface, a precise ceramic shell is attached on top.

Simply put, it may be easier to understand if you think of a thin "nail tip" that is attached on top of a nail.
It is a method that can change your smile in the most dramatic way,
while keeping your natural teeth as healthy as possible. ^^
Veneers that improved both the chipped area and the overall tooth shade at once
Chipped Tip of the Front Teeth, Smoothing, Resin, or Veneers? Which Treatment Is Right for Me
In this patient’s case, not only the front teeth,
but the entire dentition had a characteristic striped discoloration.
If the newly placed veneers alone were made dazzlingly white in such a situation,
what would happen?
Example
Rather, they could stand out from the surrounding teeth and give an awkward feeling
that would look to anyone like a "fake tooth."
So the key was to match the color so that it blended naturally with the neighboring teeth.
251224
While not standing out too much from the adjacent teeth,
the mottled appearance was removed
so that it would give a clean impression.
251224 (after)
Going beyond simply repairing the chipped area,
when the patient saw the result tailored exactly to their tooth shape and tone,
they were satisfied as well. ^^
251212 (before) 251224 (after)
When the tip of a front tooth chips,
simply "filling it in" is not always the answer.
The patient’s chewing habits,
the harmony with the surrounding teeth,
and the degree of tooth wear all need to be considered together
in order to maintain a beautiful smile for the longest time.
If you are worried about a chipped front tooth,
I hope you can feel comfortable getting a consultation about which method is most suitable for your teeth.
Thank you. ^^
