Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
When it comes to determining a person’s impression,
the front teeth play the biggest role.
They are the first thing people notice
when talking or smiling,
so even if just the tip is slightly chipped
or a little crooked,
it can be hard not to worry about it.
Today, when considering front tooth treatment,
the two options most often compared are
laminate veneers and zirconia.
I’ll explain what each one is good at,
and through a real case,
which treatment may be the best fit for you.
Which treatment is right for me?
The characteristics of laminate veneers and zirconia
Aesthetic treatment for a chipped front tooth: Which is better, laminate veneers or zirconia?
Front tooth treatment is not about choosing the most expensive option;
what matters most is
how well it matches your tooth condition.
The two methods differ clearly in how much the tooth is shaped
and in their advantages.
- Laminate veneers
First, laminate veneers involve making the front surface of the tooth very thin,
like attaching a nail tip to a fingernail,
with only a small amount of reshaping,
then bonding a precisely made restoration on top.

The biggest advantage is that it preserves as much of the natural tooth as possible
without removing much enamel.
It has excellent translucency, so it looks very natural.
That is why it is the method we most recommend
when the tip of a tooth is slightly chipped
or when you want a brighter shade.
- Zirconia crown
On the other hand, zirconia is a crown method
that evenly reshapes the entire tooth
and covers it like putting on a cap.
Because the material is extremely strong,
you hardly need to worry about breakage,

and since it covers the whole tooth,
it is very effective at correcting shape and misalignment.
“Do I need to do all four front teeth?”
A patient’s case of 고민 and visit
Aesthetic treatment for a chipped front tooth: Which is better, laminate veneers or zirconia?
Recently, a female patient who was worried because
the tips of her two front teeth were chipped
visited our clinic.
260203
The patient said that the chipped teeth were a problem,
but also that she had long been bothered by one front tooth
that looked especially crooked and protruding.
260203
The patient came in already having made a big decision
about the cost and treatment process,
saying, “I guess I need to do all four front teeth to make it look nice?”
From a dentist’s point of view, treating four teeth
might be more helpful for clinic management,
but I could not morally justify unnecessarily altering healthy natural teeth....^^
After carefully examining each of the patient’s teeth one by one,

I explained that starting with just the two teeth that truly needed treatment
would still be enough to achieve a very good result.

Rather than shaving down two additional healthy teeth,
it is true skill to properly correct only the necessary areas
so they blend in naturally.
Thanks to that, the patient was able to relax
about concerns over overtreatment and begin treatment comfortably.^^
Treatment plan
Aesthetic treatment for a chipped front tooth: Which is better, laminate veneers or zirconia?
We made a treatment plan to address both the patient’s concerns:
“the chipped part” and “the protruding alignment.”
- Right front tooth (#11): Zirconia
260203
This tooth was not only chipped,
but also slightly tilted inward,
so the outer edge seemed to stick out,
which was bothering the patient.
With laminate veneers, because the reduction is kept to a minimum,
there are limits to correcting the angled position.

So we used zirconia, which covers the entire tooth
and allows the angle to be adjusted neatly,
creating a clean, aligned line.
- Adjacent front tooth (#12): Laminate veneer
This tooth had a relatively good alignment.
There was no need to remove much enamel.

So we chose a laminate veneer that could restore only the chipped area seamlessly
while preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible.
- Canine (#13): Tooth reshaping
The slightly chipped canine had a small fracture area,
so we finished it by simply smoothing the sharp parts.
Some people ask, “If the tooth is reshaped, won’t it become sensitive?”
Because only a very small amount of the outermost enamel layer
(about 0.1–0.3 mm)
is reshaped,
it does not stimulate the nerve, so you do not need to worry about sensitivity.^^
Treatment results that improved sufficiently with just two teeth, not four
Aesthetic treatment for a chipped front tooth: Which is better, laminate veneers or zirconia?
The result was very successful, as you can see.
260210
Although we used a combination of two different methods,
it is hard to tell which is zirconia
and which is laminate veneer.
The color and translucency were completed in harmony with the surrounding teeth,
to the point that they are indistinguishable even when compared with natural teeth.
260203 (Before) 260210 (After)
At first, the patient came in worried about whether all four teeth needed treatment,
but after treating only the two that were truly necessary,
the alignment and fracture concerns were neatly resolved,
which made me feel very proud as well.^^
The correct answer in dental treatment should always be
the choice that is most beneficial to the patient.
It is not about unnecessarily shaving down a lot
and covering a lot of teeth.
Instead, we need to find the optimal balance
that can solve the complex while preserving as much of your precious natural tooth as possible.
Please do not keep worrying by yourself any longer;
come by anytime and feel free to consult with us
about what solution is best for you.
From resin for filling small fractures
to zirconia for protecting teeth,
we promise the most honest care,
always putting the patient’s dental health first.
Thank you.^^
