Why won’t the inflammation go down even if I take gum medicine for pus in the front teeth?
Hello.
I am the director of Seoul Bardi Dental Clinic.
Patients who come to the clinic
sometimes say things like this.
If I keep taking gum medicine regularly,
can I come to the clinic a little less often?
Even as the director, I fully understand that
a dental clinic is not a place everyone welcomes.
When fear and anxiety come first,
it is natural to want to try solving the problem with gum medicine first
rather than coming to the dentist.
However, taking medicine without knowing the exact cause
can actually delay the right time for treatment.
Today, I’ll explain what gum medicine actually does,
and why it is difficult to resolve periodontitis with medicine alone,
with a real case.
When is gum medicine effective?
Why won’t the inflammation go down even if I take gum medicine for pus in the front teeth?
Gum medicine, strictly speaking,
is less a treatment that completely eliminates symptoms than

something like a supplement that helps recovery.
The times when gum medicine really works well are usually these:
- Mild early inflammation
When your gums are slightly swollen or irritated temporarily because you are tired
it helps reduce swelling by supporting blood circulation.
- When used together with dental treatment
If taken as a supplement after scaling or professional gum treatment,
it can have a synergistic effect by helping damaged gum tissue recover faster.

In the end, gum medicine is not the core of treatment.
Rather, it should be understood as a supportive role that helps recovery after proper dental treatment is provided.
It can fully show its effect only after the underlying cause has been removed.
Why does it have little effect even if you take gum medicine?

The main culprit behind periodontitis is tartar firmly attached to the root of the tooth.
Tartar is a clump of bacteria that has hardened like stone,

and no matter how good the medicine is,
this stone-like mass will not dissolve and disappear.
Taking medicine may temporarily reduce pain
and make the swelling feel like it is going down.
But this does not mean the cause has disappeared;
it only means the symptoms are being hidden for a while.
Meanwhile, inside the gums,
bacteria continue to dissolve the jawbone supporting the gums.
The longer you rely only on medicine and let time pass,
the higher the chance that you will miss the valuable opportunity to save your natural teeth.
A case of a patient who came in because of pus in the front teeth
Why won’t the inflammation go down even if I take gum medicine for pus in the front teeth?
A patient who recently visited us had been seeing pus come out little by little around a front-tooth bridge that had been treated a long time ago,
240306
and after seeing an advertisement claiming effectiveness for gum disease,
they took gum medicine for more than a month.
At first, the pain subsided only slightly for a short time,
but the pus kept coming out and the front teeth became loose,
so they eventually came to the clinic.
240306
Looking inside the mouth, the six front teeth (#13~23) were connected with a bridge,
and pus was continuously seeping out from between the prosthesis and the gums.
240306
After checking the X-ray and CT,
secondary decay had progressed severely under the old prosthesis,
240315
and especially the left canine (#23) had already fractured at the crown,
separating from the root.
Because the inflammation had spread all the way to the root tip and a large amount of the jawbone had been lost,
unfortunately we decided to proceed with extraction.

Treatment process

First, after removing the old bridge that had been in use,
we extracted the four teeth (#13, 21, 22, 23) that were too badly inflamed to save.
Because a lot of the surrounding jawbone had been lost due to inflammation,
240315
we performed sufficient bone grafting so that the implants could settle firmly,
and safely placed three implants (#13, 21, 23).
After that, we waited about four months for the implant roots and jawbone to fuse well together.

Rather than simply assuming that enough time had passed and it had probably solidified well,
we carefully checked the stability values using digital equipment
to precisely determine whether it was in the optimal condition for the prosthesis to be placed.

If the value is 70 or higher,
the implant has firmly integrated with the bone.
All three implants showed fairly high values and had integrated well.^^

Now we take impressions to make the implant prosthesis.
Since the front teeth are the most important area in determining appearance,
esthetic completeness is especially important.
We run our own in-house dental lab inside the clinic,

so the technician in charge of the prosthesis can directly and in real time check the color, translucency, and shape of the patient’s adjacent teeth while making it.
Even a tiny difference in a front-tooth prosthesis can change the overall impression.
If there is anything that needs to be adjusted,
there is no need to come back multiple times and wait.
The biggest advantage of our in-house lab is that feedback can be applied immediately on the spot to complete the restoration.

Looking at the completed zirconia prosthesis,
I think we achieved a satisfying result that blends very naturally with the surrounding teeth.^^
Are you still getting through each day by relying on gum medicine?
Don’t just endure your gums’ final distress signal with medicine alone,..
First, I hope you look for the fundamental solution through an accurate diagnosis.
We will carefully examine even the smallest details of what is truly causing your gum pain,
and work together to find the safest and most honest solution.
Thank you.^^
