[Lee Yudeuk, Dermatology Specialist]
Hello,
A place that creates a comfortable face,
rather than excessive change.
This is Leejham Dermatology Clinic.
Many people may feel uncomfortable because of the uneven marks left on their faces. Your acne has healed, but the pitted traces on your skin remain and cannot even be covered with makeup, so you may be worried. In fact, what hurts the heart longer than acne itself is scars.
Today, I’d like to share practical information for those with concerns like these, including acne depressed scar laser treatments.
A beauty consultation that is truly "beneficial"
I’m dermatologist Lee Yudeuk.
Every time you look in the mirror,
confidence fades away
Among those troubled by scars,
there are cases in the mid-20s
who have deep pitted scars
on both cheeks and the forehead
from acne that began back in school.
In such cases, you may experience
reduced confidence in social interactions,
roughness on the skin surface that
cannot be concealed even with makeup,
and a problem that becomes even more
noticeable under strong lighting.
There are also many cases where people
become reluctant to take photos because
of their skin condition.

Why pitted scars form
Acne depressed scars are medically
called atrophic scars.
They occur when inflammation from acne
damages deep into the dermis layer of the skin,
leaving the skin surface sunken in as if the ground
has collapsed.
If you squeeze acne by hand or if the
inflammation was severe, deeper scars may remain.
The shapes of scars also vary, and many
people have a combination of types such as
ice pick scars that look as if they were
punched with an awl, boxcar scars with
round bowl-like shapes, and rolling scars
that appear broadly indented like waves.
The reason these scars form is that collagen
is abnormally rearranged during the skin’s
healing process.
In normal skin, collagen fibers should be
closely interwoven like a net, but the area
damaged by inflammation loses this structure,
causing the skin to be pulled downward.

A combined approach including acne
pitted scar laser treatment
At Leejham Dermatology Clinic,
we use a comprehensive approach called
CLO.
It is a method that applies Chemical,
Laser, and Operational methods at the
same time to address various types of scars.
The chemical method is also called CROSS,
and involves applying a chemical agent called
TCA directly to the scar area.
This agent stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis
to promote increased synthesis of collagen
and elastin.
You can think of it as similar to filling in
sunken ground with soil.
For acne pitted scar laser treatment,
we use fractional lasers.
Our clinic has various devices such as
PICO fractional, Secret, and Tixel. These lasers
create thousands of microscopic holes in the
skin and stimulate the dermal layer.
In this process, the skin’s natural ability to
normalize itself is activated, encouraging new
collagen production and positive changes in
scars.
It can also help with pore-related changes,
so it may be considered as part of overall
skin texture management.
For surgical methods, we use subcision and
punch techniques.
In the case of deeply pitted ice pick scars,
we carry out a procedure that uses a needle to
cut the fibrotic bands beneath the scar tissue
that pull the skin downward.
This method helps the skin lift upward.
These three methods are combined according
to the type and depth of scars of the person
who visits us, and depending on the individual,
several sessions may be necessary.

Scar prevention and daily care
Acne pitted scar laser care is important,
but it is even more important to prevent
scars from forming in the first place.
When acne appears, never squeeze it by hand.
Bacteria on your hands can worsen the
inflammation and can damage the dermis.
If your acne is severe, getting an early
examination at a dermatology clinic and
starting an appropriate method can be the
first step toward preventing scars.
After receiving treatment, steady effort is needed.
Adequate hydration is especially important,
and you should drink more than 2 liters of
water a day and apply moisturizer carefully
in the morning and evening.
If the skin becomes dry, regeneration slows
down and scars can become deeper.
Sunscreen is also essential.
Ultraviolet rays can cause pigmentation in
scar areas and interfere with the skin’s
normalization, so we recommend using a
product with SPF 30 or higher even indoors.
Choosing basic skincare products is also important.
Avoid products that are excessively oily, and
it is good to use moisturizers containing
ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
Also, vitamin C serums can help collagen
production and may aid scar care, so please
consider using them consistently.

Understanding the process
Scar care varies from person to person,
and multiple sessions may be needed.
It may be difficult to achieve perfectly flat
skin, but you may experience overall changes
in skin condition.
It is important to maintain healthy skin by
receiving regular skin care.

A sincere word
Considering skin care that includes acne
pitted scar laser treatment is not simply
about changing your appearance.
It can be a process of regaining lost
confidence and being able to face the
world more boldly.

to provide diagnoses and solutions suited to
each person’s skin.

suffer alone for too long; consult a doctor.
We sincerely hope this helps with your skin
concerns, and that when you stand in front of
the mirror every morning, you can greet the day
with a happy smile.
