Hello, this is the Gangnam branch of Lee Jiham Dermatology Clinic.
Have you ever faced your reflection and thought, “I don’t look like I used to”? You may have felt unfamiliar with the face in the mirror, and been frustrated that no matter how much you cared for your skin, sagging seemed to continue. Through today’s post, we’d like to share your concerns and take some time to look for a lifting solution that truly suits you.
Not long ago, there was a patient I met in the consultation room. In their mid-40s, they asked various questions cautiously throughout the consultation. “My skin has quite a bit of sagging. Would Gangnam Station Thermage work for me?” They said while gently lifting their cheek with a hand, “I’d be happy if I could get even that much of an effect.” I still remember that moment vividly. In fact, their concern was one many people share: the hope that comes with a lifting procedure, alongside the anxiety of whether it is truly the right choice for them.
After examining the patient’s skin in detail, it was clear that this was not just simple sagging—the skin itself had significantly lost elasticity. As cheek volume decreased, nasolabial folds deepened, and the jawline was no longer as defined as before. In cases like this, we carefully discussed what type of lifting would be appropriate and began explaining it step by step.

Why does skin lose elasticity?
As we age, several changes occur in our skin. The biggest change is the decrease in collagen and elastin. These two components act like pillars supporting the skin. Just as a building tilts when its steel framework weakens, the skin sags when these components decrease. On top of that, gravity, sun exposure, and stress cause elasticity to decline even faster.
Especially after the age of 40, changes in female hormones have a major impact as well. As estrogen decreases, the skin’s ability to produce collagen drops sharply, and the skin becomes thinner and drier. That is why even people of the same age can have very different skin conditions. This is why it is necessary to consider these various factors and find a treatment suited to each person.

How does Thermage work?
Gangnam Station Thermage is a lifting procedure that uses radiofrequency energy. It delivers heat deep into the dermis without damaging the skin surface. This thermal stimulation contracts collagen and induces the production of new collagen. To put it simply, it is similar to making a stretched rubber band shrink back again. At the same time, it awakens the skin’s own regenerative ability, allowing you to experience improved elasticity over time.
The Thermage CPT we use at our clinic is a proven radiofrequency device with excellent effects for skin tightening and collagen regeneration. Some effect can be seen right after the procedure, but the full changes appear between 4 and 12 weeks. As collagen slowly regenerates, improvements develop gradually, and the maximum effect can be felt after 2 to 3 months. This ongoing improvement process can be considered one of Thermage’s biggest advantages.

Procedure process and return to daily life
“Does it hurt a lot? Won’t it leave scars or anything like that?” That was the patient’s biggest question. Thermage produces a heat sensation and a snapping feeling like a rubber band, but for most people it is tolerable. If needed, we apply numbing cream to minimize discomfort. The procedure takes about one hour for the full face, and because there are no special incisions or wounds, there is no separate recovery period.
There may be slight swelling or redness right after the procedure, but it subsides within 1 to 3 days. Most people can wash their face and wear makeup from the same day, and it does not interfere with daily life. However, it is best to avoid saunas, Korean steam rooms, and excessive exercise for about a week. Thorough sun protection and sufficient moisturizing will greatly help maintain the results.

Continuous care, and why it matters
There was one more thing I told the patient: “Lifting does not end with just one session; ongoing care is necessary.” The effects of Gangnam Station Thermage vary from person to person, but generally last about 6 months to 1 year. They depend on skin care status, age, and lifestyle habits. To maintain the effect for longer, I recommend repeat treatment every 6 months to 1 year.
Everyday habits are also important. Be sure to apply sunscreen, and getting enough water and regular sleep greatly helps skin regeneration. Of course, quitting smoking is essential. If you combine these daily habits with a lifting procedure, you can maintain youthful skin for much longer. I always tell my patients, “I can help with the procedure, but maintaining the results is up to you.”

Beauty that suits you
We view dermatology treatment not simply as care, but as a process of completing your beauty. Above all, what matters is naturalness without overdoing it, and long-lasting trust. Every skin type is different, so our philosophy is to provide not just a simple procedure, but diagnosis and solutions tailored to each person’s skin.
Aging is a natural process, but that process can be made a little healthier and more beautiful. Gangnam Station Thermage is one good option that can help you along that journey. But the most important thing is to understand what you truly need and find the method that fits that need.
We will be with you through honest care, proven procedures, and the hands of a specialist. In order to become the name you think of first when skin concerns arise, we will continue providing honest care without change.
