[Dermatology Specialist Lee Yudeuk]
Hello,
A place that creates a comfortable face
rather than excessive changes.
This is Lee Jiham Dermatology Clinic.
Do the small bumps around your eyes bother you every time you look in the mirror? Have you ever felt frustrated because makeup seems to make them stand out even more? Many people come to the clinic with these concerns. Although they may seem like a small skin issue, syringomas are the kind of thing that stays on your mind every time you look in the mirror and can make you self-conscious when meeting people. Today, through one patient’s story, I’d like to explain syringoma removal in detail.
A beauty consultation that does good
I’m dermatology specialist Lee Yudeuk.
Gangnam Station syringoma removal, can it be done easily?
Syringomas are benign tumors that arise when the sweat glands in our skin,
especially a tissue called the eccrine sweat gland,
proliferate abnormally.
Simply put, the ducts that release sweat
become overgrown or blocked,
causing small bumps to protrude
on the skin surface.
The biggest characteristic of syringomas
is that they usually appear around the eyes.
In particular, they often show up
under the eyes and on the lower
eyelids, because this area has thin skin
and densely packed sweat glands,
making it an environment where syringomas
can easily develop.
They are usually small, about 1–3 mm,
but when several cluster together,
they become much more noticeable.
Their color is often similar to skin tone
or slightly yellowish, and they feel firm
when touched.
They are characterized by a hard, grain-like,
small pebble-like texture.
“Then why do they appear?
Did I do something wrong in caring for my skin?”
The patient asked with a worried expression.

The exact cause of syringomas is still
not fully known, but several factors
are believed to be related.
The biggest factor is genetics.
If you have parents or siblings
who have syringomas,
you are more likely to develop them as well.
This is a constitutional trait,
not something that happens because you
have cared for your skin poorly.
The second factor is hormonal changes.
Because they are especially influenced by
female hormones such as estrogen,
syringomas may appear or grow during
puberty, pregnancy, or the menstrual cycle.
That is why they tend to be more common
in women in their 20s to 40s.
Third, skin type can also play a role.
It is known that people who sweat a lot
or have thicker skin may have a slightly
higher risk.
“There’s absolutely nothing you did wrong.
This is due to constitutional factors and
hormones, so there is no need to blame yourself at all,”
I said, and the patient’s expression
seemed to relax a little.

How is syringoma removal done?
Because syringomas are benign tumors,
they pose no health problem at all.
However, if you are concerned for cosmetic reasons,
they can certainly be removed.
The method we mainly use for
syringoma removal at our clinic is
CO2 laser.
CO2 laser is a laser that uses carbon dioxide
and has the characteristic of being readily absorbed by water molecules.
Because our skin is made mostly of water,
when this laser is applied, the tissue in
the syringoma area is instantly vaporized
and removed.
Since it can selectively remove only the syringoma
without affecting the surrounding normal tissue,
it helps minimize the risk of scarring.
“Does the procedure hurt?
How long does it take?”
The patient asked in a tense voice.
I explained the Gangnam Station syringoma removal
procedure in detail. First, a local anesthetic
cream is applied to the treatment area,
or injection anesthesia is given if needed.

Once the anesthesia is sufficient, you will
feel almost no pain,
and there may only be a little pressure
or a slight stinging sensation.
After the area is numbed, each syringoma
is removed one by one with the CO2 laser.
Since the laser only needs to be applied
to each lesion for a few seconds,
the procedure takes about 10–15 minutes
if there are only a few, and even with more
lesions it does not take more than 30 minutes.
During the procedure, there may be a slight
burning smell.
This comes from the tissue vaporizing,
so it is a normal reaction and there is no need to worry.
After the procedure, small wounds remain
where the lesions were removed,
and we finish by applying a regenerative ointment.
Right after the procedure, the area may be
slightly red and stinging,
but in most cases it settles down within a day or two.
You can return to daily life immediately,
but you should take care not to touch
or irritate the treated area.

How to prevent and manage syringomas
The patient asked, “After treatment, won’t they come back?
Is there any way to prevent them?”
To be honest, because syringomas are strongly influenced
by constitutional factors,
complete prevention is difficult.
However, there are ways to help prevent them
from worsening or slow the rate at which new ones appear.
First, it is important to keep the skin healthy.
In particular, the skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive,
so it needs sufficient moisture.
Dry skin can interfere with sweat gland function.
Use eye cream or moisturizer regularly,
and keep indoor humidity at an appropriate level.
You should pay even more attention during winter
or in environments where air conditioning is used for long periods.
Second, please be careful not to irritate the area around the eyes.
If you have a habit of rubbing your eyes often
or rubbing them hard, it is best to correct it.
When the skin is exposed to physical irritation,
the sweat glands can become stimulated,
which may cause syringomas to develop or grow.
When removing makeup, instead of wiping hard,
let the cleansing product dissolve the makeup sufficiently
and then gently wipe it away.
Third, maintaining hormonal balance can also help.
A regular lifestyle, adequate sleep,
and proper stress management are important for balancing hormones.
In particular, if you have irregular periods
or a hormone-related condition,
it is also a good idea to manage it through gynecology care.
Fourth, I recommend regularly checking your skin condition.
If syringomas begin to appear one by one,
early detection allows them to be managed while they are still few in number.
Removing a small number early is much more efficient
in terms of time and cost than removing many all at once
after they have increased significantly.

Skin concerns are not simply a matter of appearance.
They are important issues directly connected
to our confidence and quality of life.
Even lesions that seem small, like syringomas,
can be a daily source of stress for the person affected,
and we never forget that.
Honest care, proven procedures,
and the hands of a specialist.
We aim to be a clinic you can trust over time,
not just after one treatment.
To become the name that first comes to mind
when skin concerns arise,
we will continue providing honest and safe care
without change.
