Even makeup
couldn't hide
those marks
I often hear patients say that no matter how carefully they cover them with makeup, dark marks begin to show through again by the afternoon, leaving them sighing unconsciously in front of the mirror.
I am writing this today with the hope that it will serve as a small guide for those who have grown tired after trying various cosmetics and treatments for a long time without lasting results, as well as those who have just completed pigmentation laser toning and feel unsure about how to care for their skin from here on.
The time after treatment affects how long the results last just as much as the treatment itself.
Why does pigmentation keep coming back even after it has been removed?
Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which melanin is produced excessively due to stimuli such as ultraviolet rays, hormones, and friction, leaving uneven marks on the skin.
Melasma, freckles, blemishes, and even the brown marks left after acne can all broadly be considered pigmentation concerns.
Freckles and blemishes that sit relatively shallow in the epidermis tend to appear lighter, while melasma rooted deep in the dermis is more persistent and can remain bothersome for a long time.
It may be easier to understand if you think of it as the difference between paint lightly applied to the surface of drawing paper and paint that has soaked into the inside of the paper.

Why it is removed gradually over multiple sessions
Pigmentation laser toning uses low-intensity laser energy at a specific wavelength, delivered over multiple sessions to break deeply seated pigment into very small particles.
The body gradually expels the finely fragmented pigment naturally over time.
Rather than removing it forcefully all at once, the treatment gradually lightens it over several sessions, so the burden on the skin is relatively lower.
It may also be combined, depending on the condition, with IPL, which treats multiple types of pigmentation using a broad range of light, or with dual toning.
However, the number of sessions and intervals required vary from person to person depending on the type and depth of the pigmentation.

The first habit that requires even more care than the treatment itself
After receiving pigmentation laser toning, the most important aspect of care is undoubtedly sun protection.
Immediately after treatment, the skin is more sensitive than usual, so pigmentation that has been carefully lightened can easily return if the skin is exposed directly to ultraviolet rays.
To prevent the marks that were so difficult to lighten from returning to their original state, apply a sunscreen with around SPF 50+ carefully every morning and reapply it every two to three hours.
Using physical methods of blocking light, such as a hat or parasol, can provide additional protection.

When you become impatient about redness and flaking
Immediately after pigmentation laser toning, the skin may become dry and develop some superficial flaking. It is important not to forcibly peel or rub it at this time.
Flaking is part of the natural process through which fragmented pigment leaves the skin, so it will fall away on its own over time.
In the meantime, apply plenty of a gentle moisturizer to keep the skin barrier hydrated, and postpone activities that raise your body temperature, such as saunas, jjimjilbangs, and strenuous exercise, for about a week after treatment.
The less heat and friction the skin is exposed to, the more opportunity it has to focus on recovery.

Do not be alarmed if it looks darker
Some people are surprised when their pigmentation appears slightly darker immediately after treatment. This is often a temporary reaction that occurs as fragmented pigment rises to the skin's surface.
In most cases, it gradually settles naturally over one to two weeks along with light flaking.
However, the speed and degree of change vary from person to person depending on the nature of the pigmentation and the condition of the skin. Rather than expecting dramatic changes after just one or two sessions, it is important to continue caring for the skin consistently over multiple sessions.
The more prone pigmentation is to returning, as with melasma, the more important daily care after treatment becomes in preserving the results for longer.

It is shaped by each day that follows
Pigmentation laser toning is not something that ends with a single treatment. It is closer to a process that gradually takes shape through each day that follows.
When you diligently protect your skin from ultraviolet rays, keep it hydrated, and wait patiently rather than becoming anxious, the changes are more likely to last longer.
Rather than pursuing excessive changes, we will honestly remain by your side in the consultation room so that you can maintain comfortable, natural-looking skin for a long time.

The director answers your questions personally
Q1. Is it okay to wear makeup right after treatment the next day?
A. Since the skin is sensitive on the day of treatment, it is better to take a short break from makeup. From the next day, you may apply makeup lightly, focusing on products that are gentle on the skin.
Please be sure to apply sunscreen.
Q2. Is laser toning very painful?
A. You may feel a stinging sensation, like being lightly snapped with a rubber band.
It is generally tolerable, but for those with sensitive skin, numbing cream may be applied beforehand as needed to reduce discomfort.
Q3. Is it okay to have the treatment in summer?
A. It is possible, but summer is a season when ultraviolet rays are strong, increasing the risk of pigmentation returning.
During the summer, we adjust the intensity and recommend being even more thorough with sun protection. We generally recommend the period from autumn to spring a little more.
Q4. Are the effects permanent?
A. Even pigmentation that has once lightened can become darker again depending on ultraviolet exposure, hormones, and lifestyle habits.
That is why consistent care after treatment is just as important as the treatment itself, and the length of time the results last varies from person to person.
