Hello.
I’m Seoul Dia Dental Clinic at Magok Station, here to comfortably explain only the things you need to know right now about your mouth.
In the last post,
we organized what is normal and what is a warning sign
when it comes to pain and swelling after implant surgery.
If you haven’t seen it yet,
a quick review is recommended.^^
If you read the pain and swelling post,
today’s exercise topic will be much easier to understand.
Now, today’s topic.
Running has really become popular these days.
Rain or shine~ haha
People run in the morning, run in the evening,
and parks are packed on weekends.
But after implant surgery,
this question always comes up.
“Um… when can I start exercising again?”
“Can I run?”
“What about the gym?”
The short answer is:
You can exercise.
But timing is important.
Why is exercise right after surgery risky?

An implant is a treatment that places
an artificial tooth root into the bone beneath the gums.
From the moment the surgery ends, the body focuses its energy there
to attach, fill in, and recover.
But if you exercise at this time, the body’s energy
shifts toward the muscles and heart.
Then what happens?
Healing around the gums slows down,
and swelling and pain last longer.
Also, exercise makes blood circulate faster.
If that rushes to the surgical site,
the blood that had started to clot can loosen
and bleeding may start again.
So, when can you move around?

Magok Station Dentist_Resting at Home
The guideline is this.
For 1 to 2 days after surgery,
rest is best.
Resting at home is fine,
and only light movement is recommended.
Exercise is still not okay.

Magok Station Dentist_Walk
About 3 days to 1 week after surgery,
it’s natural to feel like saying,
“I’m stuck at home, and my body is getting restless.”
From this point,
a walk around the block or a relaxed stroll in the park
is enough.
But running, gym workouts, and golf swings
are still a little too soon.

Magok Station Dentist_Light Exercise
One week after surgery,
light exercise such as golf, Pilates, or a gentle gym workout
is possible.
However, actions like clenching your teeth tightly
or movements that require a sudden burst of force
still need caution.

Magok Station Dentist_Running
Two weeks after surgery. From this point,
running and light hiking are possible for most people.
For exercise lovers, haha
this is exactly the feeling of,
“Ah, I finally feel human again…"
^^
However, if you had bone grafting or sinus surgery,
you need to be more careful.
For at least 2 weeks, and in some cases 3 to 4 weeks,
only walking is recommended during this period.
What you should avoid when exercising

Magok Station Dentist_Sauna Restriction
After this treatment,
behaviors that increase pressure in the mouth
can also be a problem.
So,
no using straws,
and no forcefully spitting saliva.
Breathing hard enough to strain the mouth
can also cause bleeding.
Also, saunas, heated rooms, and hot steam showers
should all be avoided for at least 1 week.
If blood rushes to the area, swelling and bleeding can return.
To summarize today’s story at a glance
0 to 2 days
→ Rest
3 days to 1 week
→ Walking, strolling OK
After 1 week
→ Golf, light gym workouts OK
After 2 weeks
→ Running, hiking possible
If you had bone grafting
→ Only walking until 3 to 4 weeks
With implants,
placing them well is important,
but waiting for them to settle well is even more important.
Exercise is the same.
If you just go a little slower,
that tooth will stay with you much longer.
