Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, providing trustworthy care
with attentive treatment near Magok Station.
In Part 2, we talked about why snoring is a dental issue,
and the connection between the jaw and the airway.
Today is probably the right time to ask this question.
"So what happens if you just leave snoring alone?"
Many people do nothing because they don't notice it while sleeping,
and they seem fine during the day.
"It's a little noisy, but so what?"
"I don't notice it while I'm asleep anyway."
"Doesn't everyone get that way as they get older?"
But here’s the thing.
The longer snoring is left untreated, the more quietly
and deeply it begins to affect the entire body.
Today, I’ll go over what happens
when snoring is left untreated, one by one.
From Snoring to Sleep Apnea
Many people are confused about whether snoring and sleep apnea
are the same thing or different things.
To put it simply:
Snoring means the airway has become narrowed,
while sleep apnea means the airway has become blocked.
As snoring worsens, the airway gradually narrows further,
and the moment it becomes completely blocked, breathing stops.
That is sleep apnea.
Magok Station Dental_Sleep Apnea
If breathing stops for 10 seconds or longer
and this happens 5 times or more per hour,
it is diagnosed as sleep apnea.
In severe cases, it can happen 30 times or more per hour,
meaning breathing stops once every 2 minutes.
You may not realize it while sleeping,
but the body is under a great deal of strain.
Snoring: What Happens When It Is Left Untreated
Magok Station Dental_Fatigue
- You feel tired every morning
You clearly slept, but when you wake up you don’t feel refreshed,
you feel sleepy during the day, and your concentration drops.
Does that sound familiar?
Each time the airway blocks during sleep,
our brain responds by trying to wake up.
You do not fully wake up, but you keep
moving up from deep sleep to light sleep
and back down again repeatedly.
So even if you sleep for hours,
it does not feel like you rested properly.
Feeling tired as if you never really slept at all—
this is the most common sign of sleep apnea.
Magok Station Dental_Blood Pressure Measurement
2. It can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease
Each time breathing stops,
the oxygen level in the blood drops sharply.
To compensate, the body
makes the heart beat faster and raises blood pressure.
If this process repeats every night, for months and years,
high blood pressure can develop and chronic strain builds up on the heart.
In fact, studies show that patients with sleep apnea
have a much higher risk of myocardial infarction and stroke
than those without it.
This is why snoring is directly linked to cardiovascular health.
- It also affects diabetes and metabolic disorders
When oxygen levels drop during sleep,
blood sugar regulation becomes less effective.
This is also why people with sleep apnea
show a higher incidence of diabetes.
If you do not sleep properly, appetite-regulating hormones are also disrupted,
which can increase appetite and lead to weight gain,
and as weight increases, snoring can become worse,
creating a vicious cycle.
Magok Station Dental_Effect on Brain Function
4. It affects brain function
During sleep, the brain clears out waste products accumulated during the day.
But if sleep apnea prevents you from getting deep sleep properly,
this cleanup process is disrupted.
Over the long term, studies have found associations with
memory decline, reduced concentration,
and in severe cases, an increased risk of dementia.
If you find yourself thinking,
"Why do I keep forgetting things these days?"
you may want to take a look at the quality of your sleep.
- It also affects the family member sleeping beside you
Snoring can reach
up to 90 decibels.
That is about the same level as the sound of a motorcycle..ㅎㅎ
What if your spouse or family member sleeping next to you
has to hear that sound every night?
Sleep disturbance, chronic fatigue, and in severe cases
even marital conflict are not uncommon.
Snoring is not just a problem for the person who snores.
If You Have These Symptoms, Be Sure to Check
Magok Station Dental_Self-Diagnosis
If any one of the following applies to you,
you should consider the possibility of sleep apnea beyond simple snoring.
- You have woken up feeling like you were choking in your sleep
- You have headaches when you wake up in the morning
- You suddenly feel very sleepy during the day
- You always feel tired even after sleeping
- Someone beside you says you stop breathing while sleeping
- Your mouth often feels dry
If even one applies to you, please do not ignore it.
The Longer You Leave It Untreated, the More Complicated Treatment Becomes
Snoring is similar to cavities.
What can be solved simply at an early stage
can spread into a deeper problem if left untreated.
What could have been managed with an oral appliance at the snoring stage
may progress to the point where a positive airway pressure device is needed,
or even surgery must be considered.
If you snore now, this is the earliest timing to address it.
At Dia Dental Clinic, after carefully checking your snoring symptoms and jaw structure,
we provide accurate guidance on whether an oral appliance may be helpful.
We are happy to help with consultations via Naver TalkTalk / reservations.
