In dentistry as well, there are treatment trends. Basically, the meaning is the same: treating painful and uncomfortable areas and restoring function and aesthetics, but as better, proven materials and simpler procedures continue to emerge, I also attend seminars often so I don’t miss the trend. Today, I’d like to talk about laminate veneers.

In the past, laminate veneers had the image of shaving the teeth a lot, causing sensitivity and pain. Of course, in the past, adhesive materials and lab materials were less developed. But these days, bonding technology has improved, and it has become possible to make thinner restorations.

Depending on the case, the amount of tooth preparation may differ, but in my view, the trend in dentistry these days is that treatment is not simply about pain or fixing a problem, but that aesthetic factors are an important reason for treatment. As aesthetic needs increase due to tooth color, gum height, tooth shape, and more, laminate veneer treatment is widely used to restore tooth form.

Compared with the past, it can now be made with almost no tooth reduction, just enough surface refinement of the necessary areas.

I’m concerned about the space between my teeth

When the patient first visited, they came in saying that because the canines on both sides were small, the front teeth had spaces and they wanted to fill only the gaps.

Fractures were observed in the surrounding teeth, so I explained tooth reshaping for the nearby teeth as well, but the patient was so concerned about the gaps that they said they wanted to fill only the spaces first.

In a case like this, since no tooth reduction at all was possible, we proceeded with no-prep laminate veneers.

No-prep laminate veneers

Without modifying the shape of the surrounding teeth, we naturally connected the shape and color and filled the space in the middle.

The patient was extremely satisfied just from having the space filled.

But a while later, the patient visited again. I wondered if something had gone wrong, but they said, I want the whole set of veneers, including the broken teeth.

They were satisfied when the gap was filled, but since their wedding was coming up soon, they became eager to do the fractured teeth around it and even the small congenitally small teeth at the same time. Since the lower teeth were even and aligned, we decided to do whitening for the lower teeth, and proceeded with laminate veneers on the upper six teeth. Because the existing teeth were small and fractured, instead of reducing the teeth like crowns, we shaped the teeth only as much as needed to make room for the veneers.

This is the result from the lab. Before trying them on for the patient, we evaluate the tooth shape, color, and lines on the model and check any revisions in advance.

Veneer bonding

After The patient was also happy with the result, and this photo was taken after bonding and completing whitening of the surrounding teeth.

Compared with before treatment, the broken teeth and yellowish tooth color were restored to an ideal shape, and the color also became brighter. The patient said they now smile broadly without even realizing it, and they were very happy.^^ In this way, laminate veneers can produce dramatic results when applied to the appropriate indications.

Recently, in mild cases, instead of orthodontic treatment, which takes a long time and involves uncomfortable appliance attachment, there are many cases where aesthetic treatment is completed in a short time with laminate veneers.
