When Past Orthodontic Treatment Makes Teeth Invisible When Smiling and Causes Stress: Dongdaemun No-Prep Laminate

Sometimes, after orthodontic treatment, teeth move inward, and when speaking normally or smiling, the teeth sit too far back, so the smile does not look good and some patients say they feel stressed every time they smile.

This can happen especially in extraction orthodontic cases, where the front teeth are moved inward to align the teeth, leading to cases where the teeth look protruded like buck teeth or the mouth looks sunken in like a receding mouth.

Teeth That Cause Stress When Smiling Solved with Laminate

In cases where extraction orthodontic treatment was done in the past, the front teeth were pushed into the extraction spaces, so when looking at the photo taken from above, the front teeth do not form a rounded arch but instead form a flat curve.

Because of this, the front teeth look as if they are rolled inward, and in the front view, the tooth shapes are too angular, giving the teeth a more masculine appearance.

In this case, while looking into no-prep laminate, the patient found our clinic and came all the way from Daejeon.

For this case, laminate was possible without tooth reduction, and we only gently smoothed the sharp protruding areas, took impressions, and the patient went home without temporary teeth.

Two weeks later, the patient made the difficult trip again from Daejeon, and we confirmed the shape and color at once before proceeding with full bonding.

Customized Laminate Matched to the Patient’s Oral Environment

Laminate was fabricated to add volume toward the lip side for the recessed tooth area using no-prep laminate.

These are the completed laminates on the dental plaster model.

Depending on the needed area, a thin layer of about 0.1 mm was made, and where thickness was needed for volume, it was fabricated with sufficient thickness.

Rather than a one-size-fits-all laminate, a laminate with curves tailored to each tooth shape is needed.

From the angular tooth shape seen when the patient first came in, a feminine tooth shape was created following the gum line.

Changes in the Smile Line After Laminate Placement

These are before-and-after photos. Before treatment, the patient was unconsciously self-conscious, so the smile did not look natural. After treatment, however, the patient smiled confidently, pulling up the corners of the mouth.

An ideal smile line was completed, with the line connecting the tips of the teeth not extending beyond the lower lip.

It may seem as if the smile was artificially created, but as the tooth shape changed, we could see that the patient naturally began smiling brighter without even thinking about it.

When comparing the before-and-after photos, patient satisfaction with no-prep laminate is quite high, unlike with other treatments.

Because the patient lives too far away, it may be difficult to come in for mid-treatment bite checks, but we recommend stopping by from time to time for an examination.

Through this no-prep laminate case, the patient was able to move on from the stress of smiling after orthodontic treatment and could smile brightly again, which made the day very rewarding for us.^^
