A laminate veneer is a treatment intended to restore the shape and color of teeth, and to achieve aesthetic and functional recovery, by removing only the necessary part of the outer surface of the tooth (the enamel layer), or in some cases by performing no reduction at all.

What is a laminate veneer, and what is a veneer?

If you search thoroughly, you may find a lot of information but still feel confused. In conclusion, they mean the same thing.

A veneer is a treatment in which a thin porcelain restoration, like a laminate veneer, is attached to the tooth surface. So in the end, they are the same term, and what is originally called laminate veneer is often referred to as a laminate veneer.

The word veneer also means a thin plate, and because of that, this treatment does not require as much tooth reduction as a crown; it minimizes damage to the tooth by reducing only the necessary areas and obtaining adhesion from the enamel, the outer layer without nerves.

What material are laminate veneers made of?

Laminate veneers are made of ceramic. Nowadays, there are advertisements saying laminate veneers are made with a thickness of 0.1 mm, and even 0.01 mm, but it raises the question of whether a thickness of 0.01 mm is really possible. Even 0.1 mm is extremely thin, but that does not mean every area should be made at that thickness; areas that need to look thin should be thin, and areas that need sufficient thickness should be given the proper thickness.

Since each tooth requires different correction thicknesses in this way, laminate veneers must also be made in varying thicknesses.

They are said to be made of ceramic, but the details vary depending on the material. There are zirconia, feldspathic, e.max, and others. For now, laminate veneers made of zirconia have more disadvantages than advantages in terms of adhesion and aesthetics, so you can think of them as a material that is rarely used for laminate veneers.

Recently, a patient had several questions and wrote them down in advance. I like explaining these things, so I told them to ask everything, and as expected, the questions were similar.

Doctor, people say laminate veneers are often made with e.max. What is that??

�

What is e.max?

To put it simply, it is not the name of a material, but the product name. It is like calling adhesive note paper “Post-it.”

�

Ivoclar Vivadent’s product name for lithium disilicate ceramics is e.max. It is so well known that people call it e.max, and I also use that name for convenience. Compared with the past, e.max has been improved in every aspect, including aesthetics, strength, and fabrication methods, so you can think of lithium disilicate ceramics as being used in almost every dental clinic.

Also, these days clinics give their own names to products, such as oo-film, oo-nate, and oooo-sh, so when patients come in for consultation they may say things like, “Can I get oo-nate? Please do that for me.” You can think of this as being similar to a product name; the actual material itself is the same material (block).

�

There are also people who ask, “What are Vita, Mark, and feldspathic porcelain?” and you can think of them as meaning the same thing. Mark is the product name used by Vita for a material called feldspathic porcelain.

�

The advantage of this material is excellent aesthetics, but its drawbacks are relatively lower strength and difficulty in making adjustments to the laminate veneer.

Advantages and disadvantages of each material

I briefly explained the advantages and disadvantages above, but let me organize them in a table.

Recently, adhesive techniques have advanced greatly, and the technical skills of each dental lab have also improved significantly, so both materials can be considered excellent for laminate veneers.

However, while material, lab work, and adhesion are important, the most fundamental issue is how the diagnosis is made and how the teeth are designed and fabricated.

�

When are laminate veneers done?

In the past, the cases for laminate veneers were fixed. They were attached to teeth such as peg lateral teeth or teeth with spaces, where almost no reduction was needed, and the veneers were fabricated thickly without tooth reduction.

�

Recently, as mentioned above, if only the minimum necessary reduction is performed and the restoration is fabricated accordingly, the range of indications for laminate veneers can expand.

1. Tooth discoloration

When discoloration from tetracycline staining, fluorosis, intrinsic staining, and similar causes is difficult to improve with regular whitening.

2. Tooth shape abnormalities / tooth size imbalance

• Teeth that are too small or disproportionate (peg lateral, malformed teeth)

• Tooth wear or minor fractures

Enamel hypoplasia and other minor shape abnormalities

That is why it is important to come in frequently at first to have your bite checked and to receive regular checkups to reduce the risk of fracture.

This is something I often say during consultations: Not every case can be covered with laminate veneers, and no-preparation treatment is not always possible depending on the tooth alignment.

the diagnosis can vary greatly even for the same person.
