Hello. I’m Dr. Jo Hyun-woo of 입체성형외과.
These days, many people who feel that their faces look long are coming to our hospital.
As I explained in my previous column, when the midface is long, solving it through double jaw surgery rather than lower jaw surgery is more effective based on facial bone CT images.
However, there is something I was not able to mention there.
If the midface is long, does that really mean the face is not beautiful? Is a face only beautiful and attractive if the proportions are always 1:1:0.8?
For example, let’s take a slight look at facial analysis using photos of well-known celebrities.
Among celebrities whom various communities say have a long midface, there are Lee Ji-ah, Ryeo-won, Jessica, YoonA, Sunmi, Tiffany, and Yoo In-na.
Of course, you would think they are beautiful and attractive.

This is Lee Ji-ah’s face. Looking at the proportions of her face, it is about 1:1:1.2.
We can see that it is quite far from the proportion we consider ideal, 1:1:0.8, and that there is a long feel to the midface and the lower face.
Even if the midface is long and the chin is also long like this, it can still be seen as beautiful and attractive.

Next is Girls’ Generation’s YoonA. YoonA’s frontal facial ratio is 1:1:1.
The chin length is not particularly long, but the midface does not look short.

Even from the side view, her middle face does not look short. But YoonA is also someone with a very attractive face.

The last person I would like to mention is Sunmi. Sunmi’s frontal facial ratio is about 1:1:1.
The chin length is on the shorter side, but the midface seems long.
However, Sunmi also has an attractive and beautiful face.
Not only the three celebrities mentioned above, but if we analyze the faces of the other people I mentioned at the beginning,
they all have a somewhat long midface, yet all of them have attractive faces.
Patients come in and feel that their faces are long, and they think that making the face shorter through double jaw surgery will make it beautiful and attractive,
but as shown in the examples above, even if the midface is long, you can still have a sufficiently attractive face.
As I analyzed them, it also seems that these celebrities mostly have broad, open foreheads.
Also, even if the midface is long, if the lower face is a little shorter, it does not seem to give the impression that the face looks long.
Whenever you receive a consultation, do not decide on surgery based too much on proportions. If you keep in mind that even with a long midface, you can still have a sufficiently attractive face without double jaw surgery, I think you will be able to achieve a beautiful face in a simpler way.
Thank you.
