Hello. This is Lucid Dental Clinic.
Even though you brush your teeth carefully,
does tooth decay still develop, or
have you ever been told during a dental checkup that "there is a lot of food stuck between the teeth"?
The reason is that brushing alone makes it difficult to
manage the spaces between teeth perfectly.
A toothbrush is effective for cleaning the front, back, and chewing surfaces of the teeth,
but it is difficult to reach the narrow spaces between teeth.
This is where dental floss is needed.
Dental floss helps remove plaque and food debris from between teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.

What happens if you do not use dental floss?
The spaces between teeth are areas where food gets stuck easily,
and bacteria can grow quickly.
Plaque left in these spaces can, over time,
lead to tooth decay or gum inflammation.
Because it is not very visible,
it is not uncommon for cavities to be found during a checkup even when the teeth look fine on the surface.
Using dental floss is not simply for a clean feeling,
but can be seen as a basic habit for preventing oral problems.

When is it best to use dental floss?
It is best to use dental floss consistently once a day.
It is usually recommended to use it before or after brushing before bed.
▪️ Helps remove food particles stuck during the day
▪️ Helps reduce bacterial growth overnight
▪️ Plays a positive role in gum care
What matters most is the habit of using it consistently every day, rather than the exact timing.

How to use dental floss correctly
Using dental floss does not automatically mean it will be effective.
Incorrect methods can irritate the gums, so it is a good idea to practice slowly while following the steps below.
- Prepare about 40 cm of dental floss.
- Wrap the floss around the middle fingers of both hands, leaving about 3–4 cm in the middle, and hold it taut.
- Gently guide it between the teeth.
- Be careful not to poke the gums; wrap it in a C shape along the side of the tooth.
- Move it gently up and down to remove plaque.
- Repeat on the adjacent tooth using the same method.
*Please avoid snapping the floss into place, as this can cause gum damage.
Common misconceptions about using dental floss
"I do not use dental floss because it makes my gums bleed."
Many people say this.
However, the reason bleeding occurs when using dental floss is usually because
inflammation is already present in the gums.
There may be bleeding at first,
but if used correctly and consistently, the gums often gradually become more stable.
However, if bleeding or pain continues for a long time,
it is a good idea to have a dental checkup to assess the condition.
What type of dental floss should you choose?
Dental floss comes in several types depending on its form.
▪️ Standard string floss
▪️ Waxed floss
▪️ Floss with a handle
For people whose spaces between teeth are narrow,
a thin and soft type is recommended,
while for people whose spaces between teeth are relatively wide,
a slightly thicker floss may be a good choice.
Finding the floss that suits you best is
the first step toward consistent use.

What is the difference between dental floss and interdental brushes?
Dental floss is suitable for narrow spaces between teeth,
and interdental brushes are helpful when the spaces between teeth are wider.
Not everyone is suited to the same tool,
so it is important to choose the right one based on your oral condition.
We especially recommend dental floss for the following people.
▪️ People who keep getting cavities even though they brush carefully
▪️ People whose gums bleed frequently
▪️ People who often get food stuck between their teeth
▪️ People who are concerned about bad breath
Using dental floss is not a difficult or bothersome routine;
once you get used to it, 1–2 minutes a day is enough.
Dental floss is not a substitute for dental treatment,
but the foundation of preventive care to reduce the need for treatment.
If you use dental floss along with brushing,
it can help keep your teeth and gums healthier.
At Lucid Dental Clinic, we value not only treatment,
but also guiding patients on proper oral care habits that can be practiced in daily life.
If dental floss feels difficult to use,
it may also be a good idea to consult us during your visit
about a method that suits you.
