Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic😊
Today, we’ll learn about gum whitening with
Newtis, a comprehensive anterior tooth treatment.
You may have heard a lot about tooth whitening,
but many people may be unfamiliar with gum whitening.
Due to various reasons, some people have gums that are not a healthy pink color
and become darkly pigmented.
In such cases, Newtis gum whitening
can improve them back to their original pink color.
Let’s look at the causes of black gums
and the methods of improvement through case examples.

Causes of Darkly Pigmented Gums
There are many reasons why gums become dark.
Gums, like skin, contain melanocytes,
and if melanocytes are naturally distributed in large numbers,
they can appear dark.
Or, due to environmental factors,
when exposed to nicotine/tar from cigarettes through smoking,
both teeth and gums can become discolored.
In some cases, as one of the symptoms of disease,
gums can turn black,
and they can also appear dark due to ultraviolet exposure (melanocytes)
or loss of vitality caused by nutritional deficiency.

Newtis Gum Whitening
There are broadly three methods of gum whitening
for improving darkly pigmented gums:
laser treatment, chemical peeling, and polishing with a bur.
Among these, Newtis tooth whitening is performed using a bur.
It is a method that uses a bur or a micro-abrasion device
to physically and directly remove the melanin pigment layer on the gum surface.
In the past, lasers were also used,
but laser treatment often required additional care,
so we now use a bur,
which can deliver satisfying results in a single procedure.
The Newtis gum whitening process is as follows.
✅ Examination and treatment plan
We check the condition of the gums and whether there is periodontal disease,
and then establish a treatment plan.
We also perform scaling to prevent infection.
If periodontal disease is present,
gum whitening can be performed after first treating the disease.
✅ Local anesthesia
Partial local anesthesia is administered
to reduce discomfort during the procedure.
✅ Removal of the gum surface
Using a dental diamond bur or a micro-abrasion device,
the discolored gum surface is thinly removed.
✅ Gum protection and soothing care
If necessary, a protective agent is applied after the procedure,
and pain relievers are prescribed.
After polishing, there may be temporary bleeding from the gums
or increased sensitivity.
✅ Follow-up visit to check the condition
You will return after about 1 to 2 weeks
to check recovery.

Precautions and questions after the procedure
These are the precautions after Newtis gum whitening.
-
Avoid hot or irritating foods after the procedure.
-
Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush.
-
Avoid smoking and drinking, as they interfere with recovery.
Does it work after one session?❓
For most patients,
one procedure changes the gums back to their original pink color.
However, depending on the degree of melanin pigmentation in each individual,
additional treatment may be necessary.
Will it become dark again?❓
If the gums are not well cared for,
they can become dark again as before.
Smoking is a major cause in particular,
and because it is also not good for your overall health,
we recommend quitting smoking.
If pigmentation is caused by a disease or nutritional deficiency,
addressing the underlying problem comes first.
Otherwise, gum whitening is not always necessary.
If you are concerned for aesthetic reasons,
it may be worth considering Newtis gum whitening.
