Hello, this is Gangnam Leong Dental Clinic😊
Ahead of the August vacation season, many people visit us for tooth whitening.
Did you know that gums can also be whitened?
Today, we’ll look at the effects of gingival whitening
and even its side effects!

What is gingival whitening?
Gingival whitening is a procedure that restores gums darkened by melanin pigment
or external irritation such as smoking and metal prosthetics
to a bright, healthy pink color.
Just as much as teeth,
if the gums look dark or are heavily pigmented,
the overall impression can change.
Especially in modern society, where aesthetics are important,
the color of the gums has a big impact on confidence and appearance,
so many people visit us to address this issue through gingival whitening.

Teeth whitening vs. gingival whitening
Teeth whitening mainly uses oxidizing agents (such as hydrogen peroxide),
whereas gingival whitening uses lasers or chemical peeling
to thinly remove the gum epithelium.

The causes of gum pigmentation include the following,
and in such cases, gingival whitening may be considered.
✅ Gums that are dark due to genetics
✅ Changes in gum color caused by smoking or prosthetics
✅ Medication side effects (anticancer drugs, antimalarial drugs, etc.)
✅ Periodontal disease and inflammation
New Teeth Gingival Whitening
Methods for gingival whitening include laser procedures,
chemical peeling, and abrasion using a bur.
Gangnam Leong Dental Clinic’s New Teeth gingival whitening
is performed by using a dental bur
to thinly remove the melanin pigment layer on the gum surface.
We previously used lasers,
but because additional treatment was often needed,
we adopted the bur method,
which can provide results with a single procedure.
Gingival whitening process
1️⃣ Oral examination
Before setting a treatment plan, we assess the condition of the gums
through a basic examination and consultation, check for periodontal disease,
and perform scaling to help prevent infection.
(**If there is a condition,
the procedure is performed after treatment.)
2️⃣ Surface removal after local anesthesia
After injecting anesthesia into the gums,
the pigmented gingival epithelium is removed
with a dental instrument (diamond bur).
The procedure takes about 10 to 30 minutes for the upper and lower gums respectively.
3️⃣ Gum protection and soothing care
Depending on the case, after the procedure
we apply a protective agent or prescribe pain relief medication.
4️⃣ Recovery and management
You will return to the clinic after 1 to 2 weeks
to check the condition of the gums.

Gingival whitening effects and maintenance period
Gingival whitening is a relatively simple procedure
that can produce immediate results,
and once recovery is complete,
the gums improve to a natural pink tone.
The maintenance period varies depending on an individual's lifestyle,
but on average it lasts 2 to 5 years.
It is best to avoid smoking and pigmented drinks (coffee/wine),
and to be careful when using metal prosthetics.

Side effects and precautions for gingival whitening
After gingival whitening,
✔ There may be temporary pain and stinging,
and ✔ If hygiene management is insufficient, there is a risk of infection in the wound area.
Therefore, please keep the following precautions in mind
and try to recover well.

Gingival whitening is more than just a cosmetic procedure;
it can play a big role in restoring confidence.
For an accurate diagnosis and satisfying results,
please make sure the clinic can provide customized consultation based on the condition of your gums,
check whether it has a periodontist,
and choose the hospital carefully based on whether it has extensive experience in gingival whitening procedures😊
