Hello, this is Ceramic Dental Clinic.
"My crooked tooth bothers me, but I heard that if I get orthodontic treatment, I’ll have to have teeth extracted."
"I’m scared of extraction, so I keep putting off orthodontic treatment..."
This is one of the most common concerns.
In fact, one of the biggest reasons people delay orthodontic treatment is the fear or reluctance of "having to pull teeth."
Today, I’ll talk about that hesitation and help ease it a little.

Why do crooked teeth happen?
Crooked teeth happen when there isn’t enough room for the teeth to come in.
Think of it as having too many cars for the parking space called the jawbone.
If there is enough room, the cars can park properly in the "right spot,"
but if there are too many cars, you end up having to park in places where cars should not normally be.
Teeth are the same.
If there isn’t enough space for them to come in, they erupt crookedly or overlap.
Correcting teeth that have become misaligned like this is what orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth is about.

So, do you always have to have teeth extracted?
Many people think that "orthodontics = extraction."
Especially those with severe crowding tend to think this way.
Let’s go back to the parking-lot analogy.
If there are 10 cars but only enough parking space for 8?
Which method is right depends on how much room the parking lot (jawbone) has.

Conditions where crooked teeth correction may be possible without extraction
Not everyone can do it without extraction.
To put it carefully,
if the following conditions apply, non-extraction orthodontic treatment may be considered.
-
The crookedness of the misaligned tooth is mild
-
There is still some room left in the jawbone (such as space where wisdom teeth used to be)
-
Especially when the upper jaw is the cause because it is narrow, and the issue can be resolved by widening it sideways
It’s hard to say definitively, but in general, extraction may be needed in cases like these.
Saying "non-extraction is always better" is not correct, and saying "extraction is always necessary" is not correct either.
It may be frustrating, but the right way is to decide after a detailed examination.

How is non-extraction orthodontic treatment done?
There are three main ways to secure space without extraction.
| Method | Description |
|---|
| IPR (tooth contouring) | Slightly reshaping the sides of the teeth to create space |
| Arch expansion | Slightly widening the alignment of the teeth to the sides |
| Backward movement | Pushing the molars backward to create space |
These three methods are combined to create space.
The amount of tooth reduction is very small and is done only within the enamel (the outer surface of the tooth).
The key point is that teeth can be made straight without removing healthy teeth.
However, because this cannot be applied to every case,
please remember that a precise diagnosis must come first.

Information comes before fear
Among all dental treatments, orthodontic treatment is one that people delay the most.
Among the reasons for that, the biggest one seems to be
the vague fear that
"teeth will have to be extracted."

But not all crooked tooth corrections require extraction.
Simply getting an accurate examination to find out whether your case can be treated without extraction will likely make you feel much more at ease.
If you want orthodontic treatment but have been putting it off, why not get an examination this time with a lighter 마음?
