Hello, I’m Dr. Park Yeol, an orthodontic specialist at Doctor Prime Dental Clinic.
Today, I’d like to talk about the people who come in for consultations about correcting a gap between the front teeth.
Many of them say things like:
“Whenever I smile, I keep covering my mouth.”
“When I take photos, I close my mouth tightly without even realizing it.”
As they get older, they become more and more aware of it, and eventually stop smiling as much...
If there is a gap between the teeth, it tends to draw attention to far more things than expected.
That is especially true for younger people who meet many people and are in a period when appearance and first impressions matter.
When you look in the mirror, you may wonder, “Is something wrong with me?” But when you actually smile or speak, it feels like everyone’s eyes keep going to that spot. You can relate to that, right?
When I look in the mirror myself, my eyes naturally go to the gap between my front teeth. When others look at me, their eyes probably go there too.

If there is a gap between the front teeth, even your smile can feel awkward, and your confidence may drop in situations like blind dates or job interviews.
You may cover your mouth because you worry the gap will show, and feel even more self-conscious in front of people you are meeting for the first time.
A gap between the front teeth is not only an aesthetic issue; functional problems should not be overlooked either.

Food tends to get stuck, so you end up using floss more often, and if small bits of food are left there, the gums can swell or tartar can form more easily. Some people also feel tooth sensitivity.
In some cases, sounds such as “s” or “ss” may come out with air escaping or sound unclear.
You may feel self-conscious every time you speak, and in important settings you may end up talking less. If you speak quickly, saliva can splash through the gap between the front teeth, which can also be embarrassing.
In the end, a gap between the front teeth or any gap between teeth is not simply a cosmetic or aesthetic issue; it can also negatively affect functional comfort and social confidence.
But this is actually a problem that can be resolved fairly easily with orthodontic treatment. Compared with correction for crowded teeth or protruding teeth, the treatment period is usually shorter and the difficulty level is not very high.

Among our patients as well, many come in for orthodontic treatment because they have a gap in the front teeth or the side teeth. After treatment is finished, they often say the same thing: they can smile so comfortably now, and people around them say they look more approachable, so they do not understand why they hesitated for years.
If this applies to you and you are still hesitating, please get a consultation with a specialist before it gets too late~
A small gap between the front teeth can change more than you think.
